ENGL 061. The Literatures of SlaveryCross-listed as BLST 061 How did Black literary production emerge to resist the institution and ideology of slavery in the United States? While this course will focus largely on antebellum slave narratives- powerful acts of self-presentation that challenged the racial logic of slavery and bore witness to its brutal violence-we will also consider Black oratory, essays, poetry, and fiction of the late 18th and 19th centuries. 18th/19th c.
