MUSI 020. Medieval and Renaissance MusicA repertory based course that discusses the history of music in Europe from the beginnings of musical notation to the birth of opera. (c. 800 - c. 1600). Mus 20 considers this varied repertory through lenses of race, gender, and identity, nationalism and post-colonial theory. Topics include musical rituals, music and magic, music and Elizabethan global politics, music, piety, & sacrilege, sexual discourse in music, relationships between music and architecture, development of musical instruments, and history of theory.
