SOCI 027D. Qualitative Methods (M)This course expands students' knowledge of qualitative research methods, including ethnography and semi-structured interviewing. Through qualitative methods researchers can develop rich and detailed understandings of social processes and problems. These methods allow researchers to examine phenomena in relationship to particular social contexts. Qualitative research is also unique in its focus on the experiences and voices of research participants. In this course, students will read studies that employ qualitative methods and will discuss theoretical approaches, as well as ethical issues involved in designing and implementing a qualitative study. Course readings will include practical guides to conducting qualitative research. Students will gain experience in qualitative methods by conducting interviews and observations and writing a research proposal. Methods course. Social sciences. 1 credit.
