FREN 044. Tyrans et Révolutionnaires

Literature (and specifically theatre and theatricality in a general sense) offers an interesting vantage point to understand the political ideas that led to the French Revolution of 1789. Through works by Voltaire and Rousseau, or representations of historical characters such as Robespierre, the course aims to define what it means to speak of historical actors. Our work will be grounded in a review of early modern French history. We'll conclude our investigation by examining the legacy of the French Revolution, in particular as it relates to the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) and its representations.
