POLS 030. Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution (IR)Diplomacy is a crucial part of international politics. This course explores: (1) how and why states negotiate; (2) how do states communicate through diplomacy; (3) when do negotiations fail; (4) the role of mediation in negotiation; (5) the role secrecy plays in diplomacy. The course introduces students to a range of research skills, including game-theoretic models and historical research. Students will learn how negotiation functions in contemporary contexts, through exploring a range of scenarios, including negotiation with rogue states, state-terrorist bargaining, and great power diplomacy.
