HIST 073. Perils & Phobias: The Case of YellowThis course surveys the vast literature of American and European accounts of China and Japan, ranging from early travel accounts to contemporary non-fiction works. Our goal is to reconstruct a European/American-centered genealogy of knowledge about the "East" - defined as a geopolitical unit, a culture, and an identity - through close readings of textual and visual representations. 1 credit.
