LALS 006. Ethnic and Latino Studies: Me, Myself, and the Otro

This course introduces students to Ethnic and Latino Studies with an emphasis on the centrality of race and racism in contemporary society. Topics will include: the impact of racialization upon social identities, social structure and institutions; social behavior and culture; the roots of contemporary social/cultural issues within historical constructions of race, racism and white supremacy; resistance and protest movements; theories of race, ethnicity and racial oppression; issues of domination and subordination; immigration and acculturation experiences; comparison of Latina/Latino experiences to those of other racial, ethnic and immigrant groups; and the potential for a pan-ethnic identity.
