DANC 020. Foundations of Dance Education

(EDUC 020  )
This course will explore both the theory and practice of dance education from an interdisciplinary perspective.  Students will become familiar with the socio-political, historical, and philosophical underpinnings of dance education in the United States.  In addition, the course will investigate research on teaching multiple dance genres across cultures.  An emphasis will be placed on culturally responsive and antiracist pedagogies via student-centered experiential learning.  Assignments will include reading, writing lesson plans, peer teaching, and a final research project based on students’ individual interests.  A community-based fieldwork component will give students an opportunity to develop, teach, and assess a workshop for school-aged populations.    Through this course, dance majors can learn about teaching dance in a variety of academic, studio, K-12, and community settings.  Educational studies majors can learn how to integrate movement into the K-12 STEM or Language Arts classrooms.  Students from any major can learn how to think critically about creating equitable educational spaces and how to approach learners holistically as embodied agents.  No dance experience necessary.
