BLST 050. Fanon: From the Postcolonial to the Philosophical Martinican psychiatrist Frantz Fanon has made an indelible impact on the fields of postcolonial studies and political philosophy. His contributions to Black thought geographically span from the Caribbean, Continental Europe, and the African continent. Drawing upon not only psychology and political theory, but also literature and poetry, Fanon has coined terms such as “a psychology of oppression” and “lactification” in regard to the psychological effects of colonialism on the colonized subject. The revolutionary thinker is equally known for his thoughts on the uses and effects of violence in the decolonial context. In this course we will critically examine key Fanonian texts including The Wretched of the Earth, Black Skin, White Masks, A Dying Colonialism, Toward the African Revolution, Alienation and Freedom, and Decolonizing Madness. 1 credit.
