DANC 063. West African Drumming This course is a study of West African drumming history and techniques from the continent of Africa as well as the African diaspora. Students will concentrate on at least two musical forms per semester from a variety of drumming styles and their corresponding techniques from the Anlo-Ewe, Afro-Cuban, and Mende cultural traditions. The course contains learning the various rhythms of each instrument, songs, and lead drum phrases for each particular musical ensemble. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of West African drumming and singing techniques on traditional instruments while being immersed in the aesthetics and foundational aspects of West African music/dance and culture. This includes polyrhythms, call and response, repetition, and improvisation. All students are required to keep a journal. A writing assignment will be required to students enrolled for academic credit. Graded CR/NC 0.5 credit or P.E. credit Spring 2025. Rast.
