ENGL 006C. Investigative Journalism Beyond the Classroom

The course will examine the tradition, techniques, and tools of investigative reporting, in terms of both its importance to democracy and its practice in the field. Students will analyze prize-winning investigative stories (Pulitzer, Polk, and Shorenstein, for example) and complete projects of their own in two or three-person teams. This course will also look beyond the strict confines of conventional print journalism with an eye to multi-media reporting (radio and other audio media, video, data visualization, etc.). Guest speakers for this course will include working professionals with expertise in journalism across media. There are no prerequisites for this course, but students with prior journalistic experience or coursework are especially welcome. Class size is limited to 15.
