DANC 053. African Diaspora Traditions II

African dance II encourages experienced students to expand their understanding and technical
execution of African Diaspora dance forms. The course will use Neo-traditional African Dance
vocabularies from the Mali Empire, Haiti, Brazil and the United States to enhance students’
visceral and intellectual understanding of African Diaspora dance traditions. Opportunities for
students to perform on and off campus during the semester will be offered. Students who take
African Dance II should be prepared to explore and access their own choreographic voice
through movement studies. The Philadelphia African Diaspora dance and drum community is
part of this rich legacy for over 60 years, while, the Swarthmore College Dance Department
commemorates 30 years of African Diaspora dance and drum traditions. Join us, be part of the
legacy. Students enrolled in DANC 053 are required to write several detailed journals, a dance
concert analysis and a short final reflection paper.
