HIST 035. The Nationality Question in Russia, 1917 to the Present: Nation-Building, Empire, and Decolonization This course explores the history of Soviet nationalities during the communist and post-communist eras. We examine the paradox of nation-building in a polity committed to the end of national distinctions and explore the way various national minorities in the Soviet Union developed hybrid national and cultural identities. We focus on the experiences of Jews, Russians, Ukrainians, Roma, Kazakhs, and Uzbeks. Social sciences. 1 credit. Eligible for Concentrations: Domination and Resistance, Empires and Nations Fall 2024.
