POLS 056. Patterns of Asian Development (CP) Patterns of political, social, and economic development in Asia will be traced, with special focus on China, Japan, North and South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and India. Topics include the role of authoritarianism and democracy in the development processes, the legacies of colonialism and revolution and their influences on contemporary politics, sources of state strength or weakness, nationalism and ethnic conflict, gender and politics, and patterns of political resistance.
