RELG 004B. Interpreting Jews: Premodern Biblical Interpretation Jewish interpretation of scripture is the foundation of Judaism; without the Bible and its interpretation, Judaism would not exist. This class introduces students to the varied ways Jews read, understood, and interpreted the Bible. The course examines premodern Jewish approaches to scripture, which developed during the first centuries of the Common Era as well as those maintained through the 9th to 12th centuries CE. We also consider what elements of premodern biblical interpretation are still in use and what has been added through modern and postmodern Jewish interpretations of the Bible. Humanities. 1 credit. Eligible for MDST Spring 2025. Kessler. Catalog chapter: Religion Department website: http://www.swarthmore.edu/religion
