ENGL 012. Tragedy

This course surveys the dramatic genre of tragedy with some attention to the possibilities of tragedy in other genres or modes. We pair this dramatic and literary investigation with a survey of debates about what tragedy is or isn’t, and about its supposed aesthetic and cultural significance. We will pay attention to the modern claims made about ancient Greek drama as well as the curious position of early modern (or Renaissance) drama.
