RELG 003B. Student Run Course: Mormon Studies RELG 003B Mormon Studies is an introductory course to the field of Latter-day Saint Studies, involving the study of the Latter-day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism. The Latter-day Saint (or LDS) faith, founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, now counts nearly 18 million adherents and is arguably the first global religion to originate in the United States. Most Latter- day Saints are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, headquartered in Utah. There is substantial debate on whether the LDS movement constitutes a denomination of the Christian faith.
The overarching objectives of this course are to (A) understand the fundamental tenets of the Latter-day Saint faith and its placement relative to the religious and cultural milieu, (B) witness the various debates regarding the history and status of the Latter-day Saint movement, and (C) gain familiarity with the field of Latter-day Saint Studies. Programs for Latter-day Saint Studies exist at a number of schools, including the University of Virginia, Claremont Graduate University, and the University of Utah. Example syllabi for similar courses taught at other schools can be found here.
RELG 003B Mormon Studies is a student-run course. As such it is subject to especial oversight from the Religion Department.
