CLST 015. First-Year Seminar: In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great

This first-year seminar introduces students to Alexander III of Macedon (356-323 BCE), the famed king who rose to near-mythic status within his short lifetime. The course examines the rise of Macedon under Philip II and Alexander’s accession to the throne, then turns to his conquests from Greece to India. It also explores the feuding of his would-be successors and the radically transformed Hellenistic world left in the wake of his death. Students will study the history and archaeology of this world, engage with dramatic ancient accounts of Alexander’s life, and critically evaluate how history, legend, and propaganda have shaped his supposedly “Great” legacy.
