HIST 014. Sex, Lies and Revolution: Democracy in Anglo-America, 1642-1776

This course locates the history of sexuality in the history of British political thought and culture from the English Civil War to the American Revolutionary era. The regicide of Charles I, the liberal assault on the family state, the public sphere, the rage of party, the joint stock company in the Financial Revolution, the Law of Nations, the balance of empire and racial capitalism in the Seven Years War will be linked through works of scholarship and a wide range of primary sources - art, theater, political philosophy, news, libels, broadside, opera, literature, diplomatic correspondence, peace treaties and constitutions - to revolutionary shifts in the social, political, culture and legal history of sexuality during this period.
