HIST 116. European Intellectual History: Remapping Time

What does history owe to geography and, by extension, to cartography?  The course will focus on a broad time frame, its focus will be on the inter-cultural and inter-imperial transfers of maps and legends in the period of the global Renaissance - medieval and early modern eras (roughly the 11th to 18th centuries).  What can the history of remapping time tell us about how it might yet be remapped? Throughout the semester, we will also explore what delving into this history of history from the can teach us about the limitations as well as the potentials of the historical discipline as it exists in the 21st century.
