SPAN 078. Laberintos borgeanos This course is all about reading and discussing the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges-the writer who turned literature into a series of mind-bending puzzles. Because we focus on brief, tightly written short stories rather than long novels, you’ll be able to slow down, enjoy the language, and really unpack what’s going on in the original Spanish. We’ll explore his “labyrinths,” where philosophy, math, and science collide with detective plots and gaucho knife fights. We’ll read Borges from two angles: as a global writer who claims the right to use any cultural tradition, and as an Argentine and Latin American author who rewrites the histories and myths of his own region. If you want to sharpen your Spanish through close reading while debating big ideas-from infinite libraries to the nature of reality-this is the class for you. Prerequisite: SPAN 022 , SPAN 023 , the equivalent, or permission of the instructor. Humanities. 1 credit. Eligible for LALS, INTP Fall 2027 Martínez.
