HIST 085. The Rise and Fall of Apartheid This class is a close examination of South African history from the end of the 19th Century to the present day. We will look closely at the lively debate among historians about the primary causes for the creation of a formal political and social system centrally defined by racial segregation, apartheid, and at the reasons why this system ultimately failed and gave way to a new constitution built around equality and democracy. We will also ask why the legacy of apartheid has been so difficult to overcome.
