LING 069. Structure of Akan Akan is a dialect cluster within the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family, spoken in parts of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. It is an important source of data for theories of syntax and semantics, with grammatical phenomena, including postnominal articles, demonstrative systems, bare nominal interpretation, serial verb constructions, and interactions between information structure and reference, that challenge and enrich formal models of language.
This course introduces these phenomena within a generative framework, using Akan as a testing ground for theoretical analysis. The course is data-driven and formally oriented: students will work directly with Akan data, engage with theoretical arguments, and develop formal representations of key grammatical structures. Prerequisite: LING 040 and LING 050 Social Sciences 1 credit Fall 2026. Owusu. Department website: Linguistics
