ENGL 096J. Special Topics: James Joyce’s Ulysses This seminar will study James Joyce’s famously formidable Ulysses. Published in 1922, the experimental novel follows its characters throughout metropolitan Dublin for less than 24 hours in June 1904. Our focus will be closely reading the novel’s eighteen “episodes” as we attend to its historical and political moment, its modernist aesthetics, and the interpretive communities that formed in its wake. Topics of interest include: colonial/postcolonial Ireland, mass culture and advertising, embodiment and everyday life, the influence of early and avant-garde film and later film adaptations, the novel form and character development, and the “Joyce industry.” Humanities. 1 credit. Fall 2025. Bryant. Catalog chapter: English Literature Department website: https://www.swarthmore.edu/english-literature
