ARTT 034A. Painting III: Critical Studies in Studio

This advanced level painting course is centered on developing an independent painting practice. Through constraint-based prompts, students will build their painting practices by working with an iterative mode of production supported by active research. As a studio based course, the production of work will be the primary activity and the small group critiques will be the primary method of critical feedback. To further facilitate the development of the studio work, students will be researching and constructing their own sphere of artistic influences. A foundation for the research end of the class will be group discussions of assigned readings and video screenings. Each week there will be a required short form writing assignment that will distill the student’s reflections on their studio work.

The pre-requisite for this class is any painting level II course or by consent of the instructor.
