PHIL 043. American Pragmatism Pragmatism is a distinctively American philosophical tradition originating in the late 19th century. It centers on the idea that the truth, meaning, and value of our ideas lie in their practical consequences. This course explores what pragmatism is, both as a tradition and as a philosophical approach. The primary focus of the course is on close reading and discussion of works by the classical pragmatists, namely, Charles S. Peirce, William James, and John Dewey. We will discuss pragmatic theories of truth and meaning; belief and action; and experience and inquiry.
