CPSC 091. Special Topics: Apps Probability CS

Probabilistic reasoning is a fundamental tool in many areas of computer science, including artificial intelligence, algorithms, graphics, and cryptography. This course introduces the foundations of probability and probabilistic modeling, with a strong focus on computational applications. Students will explore applications drawn from models of text and web data, machine learning and data mining, and randomized algorithms. Topics include conditioning and Bayes’ rule, joint distributions of discrete and continuous random variables, expectation and variance, independence and conditional independence, rare events, limit theorems, entropy and information theory, and discrete-time Markov processes.
