PHIL 001J. Introduction to Philosophy: Contemporary Moral Problems Is abortion morally permissible? What about price gouging? Are sweatshops unjust? How should we allocate the responsibility to address climate change? How should we think about justice in conservation? Is it morally permissible to engage in ethical consumerism? Is it permissible for the government to mandate vaccines? How should artificial intelligence be governed? These are contemporary moral problems that we face. The primary goal of this course is to introduce you to these moral problems and prominent ways of resolving them. In doing so, this course will introduce you to parts of ethics, political philosophy, metaphysics, and epistemology, among others. We will end the course by considering critiques of moralism-that is, whether we should care specifically about the moral dimensions of these challenges. Humanities. 1 credit. Spring 2027. Vergara.
