ENGL 009T. FYS: Transpacific Personalities: Asian American Literature and the Personal Essay This first-year seminar considers how the tension between subjectivity and collectivity has shaped Asian American literature and media since the 1970s. We will study the cultural significance of personal narration in our texts, asking how Asian American writers experiment with form to expand literary possibilities and challenge the racialized history of Asian American immigrant experience. Authors include Frank Chin, Maxine Hong Kingston, Carlos Bulosan, John Okada, Theresa Cha, Jessica Hagedorn, Wilfrido Nolledo, and Elaine Castillo.
