PEAC 010. Global Quakerism

This course traces the global rise of the Religious Society of Friends: from Quakerism’s roots within the Christian tradition, to the faith’s codification in Britain, and its subsequent spread to the United States and then other parts of the world, including to Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. We also connect this to the legacy of Swarthmore College. The course will provide an overview of the field of Quaker Studies, its relationship to peace and conflict studies, and the contemporary praxis-oriented and intersectional work of organizations and institutions following the Quaker testimonies. Students will also engage with materials in the Swarthmore Peace Collection and Friends Historical Library.
