PEAC 050. Religion, Gender, and Peace Building in Africa This course explores the dynamic relationships among religion, gender, and peacebuilding in diverse African cultural and political contexts. It examines how religious beliefs, institutions, and practices influence gender roles and identities, as well as how these intersections shape experiences of conflict, reconciliation, and sustainable peace. Students will critically analyse the ways in which religion can both contribute to violence and serve as a powerful resource for justice, dialogue, and social transformation. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from religious studies, gender studies, peace and conflict studies, sociology, political science, and international development, the course investigates the roles of women, men, and gender-diverse individuals in peacebuilding efforts. Through case studies from different regions of the African continent, students will examine how faith communities, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and grassroots movements promote conflict resolution, gender equality, human rights, and inclusive peace. Spring 2028 Mombo.
