MUSI 032. Analytical Approaches to Music in Popular Media

This course synthesizes the elements of Music 11-13 in order to explore how scholars approach analyses of music in popular media. We will study alternate transcription and analytical techniques (TUBS notation, Rhythmic Projective Analysis, Parametric Analysis), semiotics (musemes, Topic Theory), hermeneutics (culture and interpretation), and motivic composition. Students will study popular songs, music in video games, television, and film, as well present interpretive analyses and original compositions throughout the course.
