ARTH 021. Art and Technology

This course examines the intersections of art and technology across a wide range of art and popular media. Beginning with an exploration of a set of aesthetic and cultural production that includes 16^th century woodcuts, 17^th century cabinets of curiosity, 18^th century magic lantern shows, and 19^th century stereoscopes and panoramas, the course will provide historical context for a consideration of the role that various forms of technology have played in shaping art and culture in the 20^th and 21^st century. Through class trips to local museums and galleries, classroom and online discussions, guest lectures, readings, screenings, and creative experiments in art and technology, this course will reflect on emerging technologies and their historical origins to understand the ways in which the relationships between humans and machines continue to evolve in our contemporary cultural context.
