ENVS 032B. Ecologies of the Middle East

Cross-listed as SOAN 032B
This course explores the varied ecologies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and the kinds of lives such ecologies sustain. From snow-peaked mountains and fertile plains to arid deserts and historic wetlands, we will explore how humans have thrived in this region for millennia, and how such life is currently affected by climate change, imperial violence, expanding desertification, and water scarcity. We will explore the impact of new technologies in irrigation, desalination, and energy provision, and consider the role of traditional ways of life in offering a path forward.
