When and why do people participate? We will also take a strategic perspective and investigate a range of tactics and methods that movements employ. We will emphasize the power in social relations upon which collective nonviolent action capitalizes and the effects of strategic choices within movements. Case studies might include the U.S. civil rights movement, the Soviet bloc revolutions, People Power in the Philippines, and the Arab Spring, among others. Theory course. 1 credit. Fall 2014.
