ENGL 014. Old English/History of the Language A study of the origins and development of English-sound, syntax, and meaning-with an initial emphasis on learning Old English. Topics may include writing and speech, changing phonology and morphology, wordplay in Chaucer and Shakespeare, pidgins and creoles, and global English. Group I (pre-1830) This course may be taken without the usual prerequisite course in English; however, it may not serve in the place of a prerequisite for other advanced courses.
