LING 025. Sociolinguistics: Language, Culture, and Society This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics and the study of language variation and change, with a focus on variation in North American English. Topics to be examined include the following: How do social factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic class influence the way people use language? How do individual speakers use language differently in different situations? How do regional dialects differ from each other, and why? How does language change spread within a community and between communities? In learning the answers to these questions, students will carry out sociolinguistic field projects to collect and analyze data from real-life speech. (Cross-listed as SOAN 040B) 1 credit. Fall 2014.
