POLS 003. Politics Across the World

This course teaches students how to analyze and compare the politics and societies of countries around the world. Topics vary by instructor but may include the origins of the contemporary system of nation-states, the consolidation and breakdown of democratic

and authoritarian political regimes, the ways that the “rules of the game” in politics structure competition and favor certain groups over others, the politics of economic development and globalization, the nature and dynamics of social movements, revolutions and civil wars, and the role of identities, ideologies, and religious beliefs in shaping patterns of political development, and conflict, and inclusion/exclusion. The course also provides an introduction to some of the main theories, concepts, and methods used by political scientists who engage in the art of comparative politics. To explore these themes, we draw examples from a variety of countries and regions across the world.
