LING 112G. Language and Gender (LCS) How do linguistic features and behaviors contribute to the complex social construction of gender, by individuals or at a community level? This course will cover a range of topics relating to gender and linguistics, including the morphosyntax of grammatical gender, speech act theory, sociophonetic variation as a part of gender presentation, cross-linguistic comparisons of gender marking on pronouns, and more. Several subdisciplines of linguistics will be covered, including phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics. Prerequisite: LING 001 , LING 025 , LING 040 , LING 043 , LING 045 or LING 050 or by instructor permission. Social Sciences. 1 credit. Eligible for ESCH. GSST.
