BIOL 123. Stress Physiology.

The stress response is an adaptive response that helps organisms appropriately respond to challenges that threaten homeostasis. This seminar will examine the different physiological processes that play a major role in the vertebrate stress response, with an emphasis on the endocrine, nervous, and cardiovascular systems. We will explore how animals respond to stressors in both wild and captive contexts, and how overstimulation of the stress response can result in pathology. This seminar will have a major writing component, with additional emphasis on oral presentations and group discussions.

Fall 2025: Two separate (1CR) sections available. Students may register for one.

Prerequisite: Any Group II Intermediate course, BIOL 030 , PSYC 030 , or with permission of the instructor. Prerequisite course successfully completed with a grade of B (3.0) or better.
