HIST 001J. First-Year Seminar: London Beyond Control: From the Plague Year to the Public Sphere The Great Plague of London (1665), Daniel Defoe’s Journal of the Plague Year (1722), and the avalanche of imitations inspired by the latter in 2020 will all serve as points of entry into plague as a cultural crisis of modernity that has spawned (and continues to spawn) a vast corpus of new imaginaries of the relationship between self and society, risk and immunity, fact and fiction, private and public, law and justice, freedom and sovereignty.
