PHIL 079. Poststructuralism Poststructuralism is a form of critical thinking that problematizes frameworks for knowledge that we might otherwise take for granted, thus opening questions about the structures that shape and inform our understanding of ourselves and our reality. It problematizes the notion that language is a transparent tool that simply refers to a reality it describes, and it examines the way social power relates to how we experience ourselves and our world. This course will examine this “movement” as it emerges in the distinctive work of Foucault, Derrida, and Deleuze in light of contemporary questions about reality, identity, embodiment, and the relationship between self and other, as well as ethical and political questions about how we ought to live.
