LING 082. Sociolinguistics II (LCS) (Cross-listed as SOAN 041 ). The course delves into major sociolinguistic theories as well as methods of conducting sociolinguistic research including both qualitative and quantitative methods. Students will learn about data collection and online sources of data, data research management, research ethics and data analysis. Assignments will consist of homeworks, presentations and active participation in class discussions all of which will culminate in an original research project. Some topics include how language varies over time and place, the outcomes of linguistic contact, perceptions about language use, language in education, and experimental sociolinguistics. Prerequisite: LING 025/SOAN 040B or permission of the instructor if you have taken LING 001 and ANTH 001. Social sciences. 1 credit. Eligible for ESCH Fall 2025. Fuller Medina.
