LING 018. Linguistic Evolution of English: From Prehistory to Present This course will trace the evolution of English from its earliest Indo-European origins to its present-day dispersal around the globe. Students will investigate the languages, cultures and histories of the linguistic ancestors of English, and will examine how peculiarities of modern English find their origins in the unique and distinctive development of the language. Students will additionally gain familiarity with basic linguistic concepts in articulatory phonetics and phonology, as well as historical and comparative linguistics.
