ARTT 054C. Environmental Sculpture Environmental Sculpture explores contemporary sculpture and public art that foregrounds environmental issues. Through two primary projects- an individual studio project and a collaborative public installation- we will activate visual art as a means for envisioning a more sustainable and environmentally just world. In the studio, the class will develop an ethos of working with primarily salvaged, recycled, and reclaimed materials. For the public work, students will create and propose a site-specific design for Awbury Arboretum over the course of the semester alongside faculty and partner organizations. We will use the MakerSpace in Whittier Hall as a resource for prototyping and fabrication. This class will host visiting speakers and community partners related to the public art project. We will also take several field trips, including one to R.A.I.R (Recycled Artists In Residence) to gather reclaimed material, and another to visit the public art project site in Philadelphia. Arts and Humanities. 1 credit. Eligible for ENVS. Spring 2026. Joyner. Catalog chapter: Art Department website: http://www.swarthmore.edu/art
