CHIN 156. Gender and Sexuality in Chinese and Sinophone Literature and Cinema

Articulated with social changes and cultural transformations, the ethics, perceptions, and daily practices regarding gender and sexuality in Chinese- and Sinophone-speaking communities have evolved dialectically in modern and contemporary contexts. This course aims to enable students to analyze the reconceptualization and quotidian actions of gender and sexuality as represented in literary texts and films. Additionally, by examining news coverage and civic organizations operated by and for LGBTQ communities, the course also explores how grassroots efforts can eventually recharter politics and society.
This course can be taken for 1 or 2 credits.
