ARTT 006L. Drawing Structural Logic Some of architectures most important developments were made possible through innovations in the design of structures. New solutions for the opening of space, freeing the façade or spanning distances have changed how we live together and the relation between buildings and their environment. Drawing has historically been an important tool for these developments. Its potential for abstraction allows for the iterative study of structural solutions and for their refinement into design. In this course, each student will consider a case study of 20th century architecture in which structural ideas drove a project’s articulation. Through orthogonal (plan, section, elevation), axonometric and detail drawings, each student will develop an argument about the logic of a structural proposition. Weekly readings, journal entries and group discussions supplement individual work. Students will hear from guest reviewers during mid-semester and final reviews and compile a portfolio to document their work. By the end of the semester, students will have developed an ability to use drawing as a tool for articulating the design of structures. Arts and Humanities. 1 credit. Fall 2027 Devabhaktuni.
