ARTT 006M. Taking Measures: Design and the Built Environment The course is an introduction to design both for those students who are considering the Architectural Studios (studio) major and for others who have an interest in the methods used to design for the built environment. The studio is structured around intensive drawing and model making exercises that move between scales, materials, and thematic questions. We will consider how the built environment shapes living together, the role of collaboration in design, the environmental and social surrounds that situate any built intervention, and relations between space, measure and movement. Exercises lead students through experimentation, analysis, iteration and proposition so that, by the end of the semester, we examine the roles of these different working modes in a design project. Weekly readings, journal entries and group discussions supplement individual work. Guests throughout the semester offer additional feedback on themes and student work. A final portfolio introduces students to documentation and acts as a record of a first experience with the practice of design. Arts and Humanities. 1 credit. Spring 2028 Devabhaktuni.
