BIOL 114. Host-Pathogen-Microbiota Interactions Students will explore fundamental interactions between the host, bacterial pathogens, and the microbiota in this advanced seminar. Importantly, students will consider how these interactions impact health and disease. Students will use an interdisciplinary approach to evaluate these multifaceted interactions, discussing topics that include the regulation of microbial virulence factors and their mechanisms of action, the immune responses against these factors, as well as the impact of the polymicrobial communities on disease. Through critical reading and analysis of primary literature, students will learn about recent advances in experimental approaches to probe host-microbe interactions in dynamic environments.
Prerequisite: Any Group I BIOL course sucessfully completed with a grade of B (3.0) or better, or permission of the instructor. BIOL 016 required for Honors. Natural sciences and engineering. 1 credit. Spring 2026. Egan. Catalog chapter: Biology Department website: http://www.swarthmore.edu/biology
