EDUC 018. Critical Perspectives

In this course, we will simultaneously examine the theme of activism in education as we reflect upon and strengthen our critical literacy skills. We will explore essential questions, including:

  • How do student voices work to drive change?
  • How are larger social movements related to and practiced within educational contexts?
  • How can becoming a more critical thinker/reader/writer enable our activism work?
  • How does the movement to ban books impact students, teachers, and society?

We will grapple with these questions and others, troubling our thinking around activism in education. Utilizing historical, socio-political, and post-modern frameworks, we examine student-led movements, parent protests, and teacher uprisings- exploring both the promise and the challenges of people, groups, unions, and collectives who agitate for educational change.

As this term’s Educational Studies’ “Critical Perspectives” course, we will also reflect on criticality and its role in our identities and practices.
